Harold Perkins is no stranger to the LSU defense. Last season, the freshman linebacker became a breakout star with an impressive 7½ sacks and 14 hurries. This spring, Perkins is taking on a new challenge as he learns to play inside linebacker.
Perkins' presence inside shows the next phase in his development. After excelling as a free-flowing outside linebacker last season, LSU is now teaching him the whole position. "He came here to learn to play linebacker and not necessarily just a hybrid," said defensive coordinator Matt House. "The spring is a great time to do that."
Although Perkins played at inside linebacker in practice last season, coaches realized they needed him on the field as an outside linebacker due to his impressive athleticism. This year, however, Perkins has the time to learn the intricacies of inside linebacker as he goes through his first spring practice.
Perkins' versatility is what makes him a valuable asset to the LSU defense. His speed, power, and athleticism allow him to play multiple positions, including outside linebacker and pass rusher. "It's time to take the whole position and teach it," said LSU coach Brian Kelly. "He's a linebacker. He's going to play linebacker. And he's fully invested in that position."
LSU plans to use Perkins in a variety of ways this season, including on the edge with fellow linebacker Omar Speights and defensive tackle Maason Smith. With his improved understanding of inside linebacker, Perkins will bring even more dimensions to his game and make him difficult to predict.
