The Bronco Nagurski Award watchlist for 2023 was recently released, and it includes two standout players from LSU, linebacker Harold Perkins and defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo. This prestigious watchlist is voted on by the Football Writers Association of America, making it a significant recognition for these talented athletes.

Mekhi Wingo, who joined LSU from Missouri through the transfer portal, had an exceptional season. He was named a third-team All-American and second-team All-SEC. After an impressive freshman All-SEC selection at CoMo, Wingo continued to shine in Baton Rouge, recording 47 tackles, six tackles for loss, and three sacks in his first season.

His performance as a freshman was nothing short of remarkable, breaking up offenses with 72 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and an interception. Perkins earned the title of freshman All-American and first-team All-SEC, setting high expectations for his future.

Both Wingo and Perkins have already been selected as preseason All-SEC players for the upcoming 2023 football season, demonstrating the respect and recognition they have gained from their peers. It is only a matter of time before Perkins claims one of the major defensive awards, given his exceptional talent and track record.

If either Wingo or Perkins were to win the Nagurski Award, they would make history as the first LSU Tigers to receive this honor since Glenn Dorsey in 2007. This adds an extra layer of significance and excitement to their inclusion on the watchlist, as LSU fans eagerly anticipate the potential success of these outstanding athletes.
